Greg Stephanopoulos is the W.H. Dow Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Biochemical engineering has evolved from unit operations related to antibiotic fermentations, through production of single cell proteins, amino and organic acids, gasohol, and applications of immobilized enzymes. Harvey W. Blanch, the Merck Professor of Biochemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkely, is the recipient of the 2010 James E. Bailey Award.
In his lecture, Professor Blanch looks at the rapid growth of research and development at the interface of biology and engineering and projects biological engineering's potential future impact.
