A Perspective on the World's Energy Challenge [Presentation]

Modern life depends upon the availability of plentiful energy at reasonable cost. Lifestyles, industries, agriculture, health care all assume availability of energy on demand. Is this situation sustainable? These days we see daily headlines, news articles, and commentaries about energy issues, and they raise the following questions:

  • What are the facts behind the headlines?
  • What are the parameters that are driving the current situation and will determine the future state?
  • Is there truly a problem, and if so, is it a short term problem or is there a fundamental paradigm shift?

In his presentation "A Perspective on the World's Energy Challenge", Professor of Chemical Engineering and Dean of Engineering at Lehigh University, John C. Chen tries to get a grasp on these questions and seeks a perspective on the energy challenge facing the world. Chen considers the macroeconomics of demand and supply, examining data and trends. His presentation seeks a perspective into conditions that are likely to impact our lives, our industries, our society, and our environment.
