Michael Strommen is the Wind Blade Composites Program Leader at 3M and is helping spearhead the company's efforts to create coatings and films for green technologies. Which of 3M's efforts do you think is most promising?

That liquid-liquid extraction sounds like it would be a great improvement on the energy balance of ethanol. I currently work with some processes that do essentially that - though with traditional hydrocarbons. This, like almost everything the talked about, is just another way that "traditional" chemical engineering can easily be used to benefit these new processes as they are scaled up and put into large production.
