With a construction site so vast that it looks like a small city rising from the plains of Georgia, the Southern Company is making progress on units 3 & 4 at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. The company's video press kit moves through the clanging bustle of the $14 billion expansion at a time when the company faces scrutiny by environmental groups, regulators and even other nations - first, because construction began just months after Fukushima, and secondly, this is the first new commercial reactor to be built in the US in thirty years. Sensitive to safety issues, later the video focuses on the new state-of-the-art training simulator built for plant employees. There were so many innovations within the Westinghouse AP1000 design, including the first passive cooling system built in the US, that the expansion has been designated as a "reference site" and will set the industry standard for future projects.
