Annual Meeting 2012: A Guide to Pittsburgh

By: Thang Ho

No longer a bustling steel hub of the past, Pittsburgh reinvented itself and thrives as a city characterized by unique neighborhoods filled with rich ethnicity. Home to various high-tech companies, the "Steel City" blends old and modern architecture with a unique combination of steep hills, broad rivers and bridges making it an absorbing landscape. A true sports town, it would be a mistake not to mention their professional teams: the Steelers, the Penguins, and the Pirates (who play at beautiful PNC Park, just minutes walking distance from downtown). Following are some local points of interest for the wandering visitor.

The Strip District

Within walking distance from the convention center, the Strip District presents the culture of Pittsburgh with arts and crafts from street vendors. Visitors can also enjoy pastries and coffee along the strip; if possible, stop for breakfast at Pamela's Diner, which is famous for its pancakes. Before leaving, visitors should also make a stop by Pittsburgh Popcorn for a snack to take home.

The Culture District

Also a short walking distance from the conventional center, the Culture District is home to the art galleries and theatres of Pittsburgh. After a day of fun visual arts, visitors should stop by Andy's wine bar for an afternoon of drinks and appetizers. With the remainder of the afternoon, make a trek across the river to visit PNC Park and/or stop by The Andy Warhol Museum.

Mount Washington

Taking the T-train from downtown to north side, visitors will stop at the Mount Washington incline station. Take the historic incline to Mount Washington for a breathtaking view of city. Mount Washington is famous for the upscale restaurants with young and upcoming chefs. Plan ahead and be sure to make reservations for dinner overlooking the city at night.

Station Square and South Side

For those interested in the night life and newer restaurants, take the T-train to Station Square for a late dinner and dancing the night at one of many nearby venues at Station Square.

For those looking for a good drink in the quiet bar, to catch up friends and colleagues, South Side is a cab ride away. South Side is a strip of bars and restaurants. Go indulge with a great burger from Fat Head's Brewery. Take a stroll along South Side to check out the river walk before heading along Carson Street.

Hope you have a good time in Pittsburgh!
