In a small company, you can progress to the highest levels and still be involved in every area of the company. Even though there may be some level of delegation, you may find yourself pulled into the details to help solve problems.
In large companies, the nature of the number of people involved and the number of problems to manage is so large that the shift to more delegation and less detail is inevitable, PERSANTINE FOR SALE. So many large companies break into specialty silos for particular disciplines. And they'll need SMEs to work in a structure like that in order to be successful.

Very good perspectives – thanks for posting Tom! In fact, many large company understands the importance of broadening skillsets and uses a "rotational" program as a recruiting selling point. A rotational program allows a new employee to take several shorter duration assignments in various parts (different department, different business, etc) to expose the employee to different aspects of the company.
This is a point that I think many people don't value enough when comparing working for large and small companies. I started in a small company and have tried to maintain contacts outside my technical area after moving to a larger company. It can be valuable to long term career development (and options) to maintain exposure to different technologies and business groups. Even if you don't use that outside knowledge for a career change it makes you more effective when you inevitably have to work on a team or project involving those other groups. But this can take a significant amount of effort on your part.
