Have You Transitioned from Engineering to Management?

Have you transitioned from engineering to management? I'd love to hear from you!

For CEP's June Career Corner column, I'll be writing about the transition from engineering to management. If you have moved from an engineering role into management, here's what I'd like to know:

  • What were your role & responsibilities as an engineer, and what are they now as a manager?
  • How did you know the move to manager was right for you?
  • In your view, what skills and qualities are required to be a good manager, and how do they differ from being a good engineer? What's the same?
  • What tips or advice would you give to someone who has decided to make the transition to management?

When you respond, please be sure to include your full name, city and state in your comment - so that I can quote you in the article. Thank you!

Good advice! I like the idea of taking courses so that an individual can come up to speed on the "soft" skills not learned in a typical engineering curriculum.
