    Dr. Seider,

    I think this is the debate that is at every academic dean and chairman in all universities. In a 128 credit curriculum, how many topics can we include for our students so they are best equipped for the marketplace. We want to include so many additional electives from bio, finance/econ, polymers, statics and dynamics, etc. with the core curriculum (your transfer, thermo, reactor kinetics etc.) in tact.

    I do think, you hit the nail right in the coffin. So much of the core curriculum includes process design and includes principles that are included as the foundation in the Process Design sequence. In my case, we had 2 classes for process design. Instead, I would have preferred the first class to be specifically tailored as Process Design and the second for Product Development.

    Slowly now in schools, they are drilling from day one, that Chemical Engineers create new products. I actually support this tactic vs. the more traditional Chemical Engineer working in an operations environment. I would prefer the Product Development class to incorporate ideas of product roadmapping, market analysis, strategic planning, business proposals, introduction to intellectual property, and commercialization strategies which would be more beneficial for new grads in today's market.

    As engineers, the new products we create are the fuel for new job / market growth whether through startup environments ore existing large companies like 3M, Proctor & Gramble, etc. By giving the students a background in finance and product development is key to introduce students to the basic principles of entrepreneurship. If other schools like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard etc. keep promoting entrepreneurship, why can't we teach our students to take their new ideas to market?

    Oh, I think this semester, we really need to stress the change of "America Invents Act" which gets in affect this week which changes from First-to-Invent to First-to-File. I would like to see more students in college having developed their own products and secured the IP for their design as a marketable tool for the marketplace not only to possibly sell their IP/product to companies but as an example of their innovation and creativity for companies like 3M
