Meet Emily McLaughlin — Featured Student for December

What is your name? Emily Jayne McLaughlin Where are you from? Las Cruces, New Mexico What school do you go to? What year are you? New Mexico State University. Junior. Do you hold any positions in your AIChE chapter or with AIChE nationally? In the past I have been community service chair and historian of our AIChE chapter and I am currently serving as chair of the Executive Student Committee. Describe an event in your chapter that you are most proud to have been involved with. Last year, during my term as community service chair, our student chapter was able to participate in 10+ community service events per semester locally. What are your plans after graduation? In what field are you most interested in having an impact? After graduation, I plan to go straight into the work force. I am currently getting a minor in environmental management. I would like to work with renewable resources. How do you blow off steam and keep your sanity between classes, homework, and projects? To blow off steam, I am involved in acro and yoga. This helps me to stay centered. Which of your undergraduate classes have you most enjoyed? I have really enjoyed Thermodynamics 1 and 2. The curriculum is very interesting and we also have a really good teacher so that helps a lot. I also enjoyed taking Data Analysis. It was a very labor intensive class but I learned a lot so it was definitely worth it.

How did you decide to pursue a degree in ChE? My dad was an electrical engineer for his career so he's always encouraged me to be interested in math and science. I found the science part to be more interesting so I chose chemical engineering.

Do you have any advice to incoming students and underclassmen ChEs around the world? Time management is the most important skill to master! Keeping a planner of some sort will help you to keep track of all the assignments, meetings, exams, etc. Also, be sure to set aside some time for fun so you don't get too burnt out. This could be anything from taking a run to bowling with some buddies. What's your first thought when you wake up in the morning? Up before the sun again?! Just kidding. I usually take a moment to take a deep breath and welcome the day with positive thoughts. If your initials (first/last or first/middle/last) stood for something other than your name, what would it be? E-Encouraging J-Joyful M-Motivated How would you like to be involved with AIChE after graduation? I would like to be involved with the Young Professionals after graduation.
