Meet Chris Lowe – Featured YP for February

Where are you from? Ashby, Massachusetts What company/institution do you work for? I'm currently a first year PhD student at Rutgers University in the biomedical engineering department. My research interests are centered on tissue engineering, stem cells, cell-biomaterial interactions, and scaffold design. Where did you complete/are you completing your chemical engineering education? I did my undergraduate work at UMass Amherst in chemical engineering and biochemistry. How many years have you been a member of AIChE? Four Describe a recent challenge you managed, notable achievement, or obstacle you overcame at your job or in your work as an AIChE member? Having recently finished up at UMass, I was on the fence as to if I wanted to remain involved with AIChE or take some time off. I wasn't sure I would have time as I started the transition into grad school or that I would see the same benefits I did as a student member when I became a YP. I'm pleased to say my decision to stay involved and to join the Young Professionals Committee was the right one. In the last couple months I've been able to connect with other young professionals from across the country and was able to work closely with them last fall at the Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh. I'm excited and energized to continue my work with the YPC going forward.

What do you do to meet people in your field? Conferences and local AIChE meetings have been the best way for me to network. Also, just by going to events and presentations that are of interest to you is a great way to find other people in your area who have the same interests.

There are two types of ChemEs... those who_______ and those who ________. Those who say "A-I-C-h-E" and those who say "Ay-key" What's the first thought you have when you wake up in the morning? Is there fresh powder outside my window? If you weren't a ChE what would you most want to be? A sports photographer or an architect. What don't most people know about you? I like to come home at the end of the day and take the time to cook a real meal. It helps me unwind and clear my head a little after pouring over journal articles and MATLAB code all day.
