Meet Brandis Nathan, FOSSI Graduate and Chemical Engineer

Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) chemical engineering graduates are emerging professionals who are turning strong academic foundations into real-world impact. As AIChE members and FOSSI alumni, they bring knowledge, drive, and leadership to the field of chemical engineering, while inspiring and empowering the next generation.

In this interview, FOSSI graduate Brandis Nathan reflects on his time at Prairie View A&M University, shares how AIChE supported his journey, and talks about what’s next as he steps into life after college.

What have you been up to since graduating as a FOSSI scholar, and what are you most excited about now?

Since graduating, I’ve been enjoying a little bit of everything—unemployment, hitting the gym, and traveling. This is my last real summer break, so I’ve just been soaking it all in.

I’m most excited about that first paycheck, living on my own, and fully embracing this next chapter post-graduation.

Why did you choose to study chemical engineering at an HBCU, and how did it shape your experience?

I chose Prairie View A&M University because of its strong reputation in chemical engineering and the full-ride scholarship I received straight out of high school. That support allowed me to focus on my education without the stress of rushing to finish or worrying about finances.

My time at PVAMU really shaped who I am today—from the professors and coursework to the friendships and long nights of studying. The program was demanding, but it taught me how to perform under pressure and persevere through challenges. If I had to do it all over again, I’d choose PVAMU every time.

How did your involvement with AIChE—through student chapters or events—support your FOSSI experience and growth after graduation?

AIChE was a great resource throughout my college years. They offered tools that helped me sharpen my resume, prep for interviews, and even covered the cost of certain certifications I completed.

What’s great is that AIChE doesn’t stop supporting you after graduation, they continue to offer resources that help chemical engineers grow. I plan to keep using those opportunities as I move forward in my career.

How do you hope to help FOSSI’s mission of increasing inclusion in STEM and chemical engineering?

My goal is to represent FOSSI and HBCU graduates through performance. As I begin my career at Dow Chemical, I want to show that African Americans are just as capable, intelligent, and driven as anyone else in the field.

By doing great work and holding the door open for others, I hope to continue the legacy of those who came before me, demonstrating the strength of Prairie View A&M graduates and the broader HBCU community.
