Chemical engineers at every career stage are central to AIChE’s mission to advance the profession and serve society. In this series, we spotlight members whose leadership and service strengthen the AIChE community.
This month, we’re excited to introduce Shannon Servoss, a Material Science Engineer at Roche and dedicated AIChE volunteer. Through her involvement, Shannon has expanded her skills, built meaningful professional connections, and helped foster a more inclusive community for AIChE members.
How has AIChE helped you grow professionally and personally?
AIChE has provided me with countless opportunities for professional growth through volunteering. I built my technical skills by chairing technical sessions at several AIChE Annual Meetings. These experiences also helped me expand my network, which proved especially valuable during the tenure process.
Through that network, I became involved with Women in Chemical Engineering (WIC) and eventually served as chair. Until recently, I also served on the Societal Impact Operating Council (SIOC). I continue to serve with the Alliance for Disability Advocacy (ADA). I love contributing to a more inclusive environment, growing personally and professionally, and watching our organization evolve.
What AIChE initiatives or programs have you been most actively involved in?
Most recently, I served on the Societal Impact Operating Council, and I'm currently involved with the Alliance for Disability Advocacy. I'm passionate about helping all AIChE members feel included and creating an environment that provides psychological safety.
What advice would you give students or early-career professionals looking to get involved in AIChE?
Just do it! The AIChE community is amazing, and there is something for everyone. Get involved early and attend as many events as you can.
If you are attending an AIChE meeting, make a point of going to at least one session outside your primary area. It is a great way to encounter new ideas, meet people beyond your immediate field, and discover other ways to become involved.
