11 months after the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, two new US reactors got the green light from governing body NRC. This is wonderful news for the nuclear industry, but while some have visions of the long-awaited nuclear renaissance, it may be too soon to start ringing the victory bell.

Siemens Buys UK Tidal Energy Pioneer

Although tidal energy is a micro-niche market over-shadowed by wind and solar, global giant Siemens has recently upped its stake from 45 to 90 percent in tidal energy pioneer, Marine Current Turbines (MCT). Currently, the small, 25-employee, UK-based company has only one grid-connected prototype, which may not appear very auspicious.

The Heart Beats Again?

Researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles just peeled back some of the mystery shrouding the heart to prove the potential for stem cell use in repairing heart tissue after heart attacks. The small-scale randomized phase-one trial followed 31 patients who had recently had a myocardial infarction for more than two years.
