Meet AIChE Member Nooram Anjum

Chemical engineers, student leaders, and professionals at all career stages are at the heart of AIChE’s mission to advance the profession and make a lasting impact on society. In this series, we spotlight members whose passion, leadership, and service help shape the future of chemical engineering while strengthening the AIChE community.

This month, we’re excited to introduce Nooram Anjum, a PhD student at Texas Tech University and the Spring Programming Chair for the Women in Chemical Engineering (WIC) Community. As chair, she helped lead WIC programming at the 2025 AIChE Spring Meeting and 21st Global Congress on Process Safety. In this interview, Nooram shares what inspired her to step into a leadership role, how WIC creates space for meaningful connections, and the value of being part of a community that uplifts and empowers its members.

What inspired you to become a leader in your AIChE community?

AIChE has given me so much: exceptional mentors, technical skills I may not have developed on my own, and connections with people who share my passion for this field. I wanted to pay that forward, particularly for women and early-career professionals who may be navigating some of the same challenges I encountered.

Stepping into leadership has been a two-way experience. While I have had the opportunity to help shape meaningful programming, I have also continued learning and growing in ways I never anticipated. There is something deeply motivating about contributing to a mission larger than your own research or coursework.

How do you measure the success of your community's impact on its members and the broader profession?

For us, it all comes down to engagement. When members are actively participating, that’s when we know we’re on the right track. The feedback we get from attendees and speakers is just as important because it helps us fine-tune our programs and make them even more valuable. Still, success isn’t only about the numbers. What really stands out is when members find mentors, discover new ideas, or get the kind of guidance that helps move their careers forward.

On a bigger level, success means creating a space where every voice matters and members feel seen, supported, and empowered. It’s about building an environment where people can grow both professionally and personally while also contributing to the broader chemical engineering community. When that happens, we know we’re making a difference that lasts.

What role does networking play in your community’s success, and how do you facilitate meaningful connections?

Networking is at the heart of our community. Through panels, roundtables, mentorship programs, and meetups, we create spaces where genuine conversations can lead to collaboration and new opportunities.

For me personally, as I explore different career paths, I’ve seen just how powerful a strong, supportive network can be. It’s not only about finding the next job; it’s also about learning from others, staying inspired, and feeling connected to a larger professional journey.

What are some of the key professional and personal benefits that members gain from being part of an AIChE community?

AIChE members benefit in so many ways. Professionally, they gain access to technical knowledge, career development opportunities, and leadership experiences that help accelerate their growth. Just as valuable are the connections they make with peers who share the same passion for chemical engineering. Those relationships often spark fresh ideas, collaborations, and opportunities that might not have happened otherwise.

On a personal level, being part of AIChE means joining a supportive community where members feel inspired, connected, and fulfilled. It’s a space that not only helps you advance your career but also makes the journey more meaningful.
