Inside the Action: Chem-E-Car, ChemE Cube, and ChemE-Sports at ASC 2025

Each year, some of the most anticipated moments at AIChE’s Annual Student Conference happen during the high-energy competitions that bring classroom learning to life. Students from across the world put their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills to the test, all while showcasing the exciting possibilities of chemical engineering in action. The excitement, teamwork, and creativity on display in these competitions make them some of the most inspiring parts of the conference.

Below are three events you won’t want to miss in Boston.

Chem-E-Car®

Small cars, big reactions. In this signature event, student teams design and build model cars powered entirely by chemical reactions — no batteries allowed. The challenge? Their vehicle must travel a precise distance and stop exactly on target, with the required distance revealed just one hour before the race.

The Chem-E-Car Competition® is a global favorite, combining chemistry, engineering, and suspense in a two-minute dash that tests innovation under pressure. Come cheer on the finalists as they race for the international title at this year’s Annual Student Conference.

ChemE Cube™

In the ChemE Cube™ Competition, undergraduate teams design, construct, and pitch a one-cubic-foot “mini plant” that performs a real chemical process.

This year’s challenge focuses on direct air capture and regeneration, pushing teams to engineer creative solutions for one of today’s most pressing sustainability goals. Competitors go head-to-head not only in cube performance, but also in a “shark tank”–style pitch, poster session, and one-minute ad presentation.

ChemE-Sports

This competition brings process simulation to life — literally. Using virtual reality and real-time control systems, student teams tackle plant optimization and safety challenges in a high-stakes, interactive environment.

Working through realistic plant scenarios, competitors must balance profitability with safety in a race against the clock. With multiple rounds, live scoring, and audience participation, ChemE-Sports™ turns chemical engineering decision-making into a fast-paced spectator event.
